Cereral box beads for toddlers

Stringing cereal box beads – Fine motor skill activity

Hi Everyone,Stringing beads is a fine motor skill activity. Being a young toddler (25 months), my daughter is not yet ready for small beads. Already I have introduced beads to her by cutting kitchen towel roll into pieces and stringing them to a dowel.  I thought string beads to thread will be an extension to dowel. Instead of roll, this time I made beads out of cereal box.

Materials needed to make the beads

1. Cereal box
2. Knife
3. Hot glue
4. Ruler (optional)
5. Marker(optional)

Step 1: The basic idea to make the beads is to cut elongated triangles, roll them into beads. I drew elongated triangle and cut them roughly.  But you can eyeball and cut.

Step 2 :Cut out the triangles and roll.

Step 3: Apply hot glue at the end and secure the beads in place. Now the beads are ready. As you see, the beads are not the same. But I thought that would add a little more challenge to the activity.

I added a small rectangular cereal box piece at one end of a thread and gave both the thread and beads to my daughter.

Instead of stringing beads, she was pushing the thread through the beads. She needed a lot of help from me. However she showed interest to string around 5 to 6 beads.

I believe after sometimes she should be able to do independently.
