Simple science experiment to show the effect of plastic bags

One of the major threats to mother Earth is the plastic pollution.  We did this simple experiment to see how the plastic bags affect the growth of the plants.

Materials needed:

1. Fenugreek seeds  ( We used fenugreek seeds as they grow fast. Any other seeds can also be used)

2. Two container to grow plants

3. Potting soil

4. News paper

5. Plastic bag

Method:

1. We took potting soil in two containers. Threw forty seeds in each container. We did not cover our seeds with soil as we felt they grew faster that way.

2. Covered one container with newspaper and another one with clear plastic bag.

3. Placed both of them at the same sunny place. Watered both of them every day.
4. After a week’s time, we could see that the seeds in the container covered with newspaper, had started to grow. The paper was still intact. But the seeds could breath through the newspaper.   On the other hand, the seeds in the container covered with plastic bag, did not grow.

My daughter felt bad that the seeds covered with the plastic bag would eventually die. She did not want them to die. She wanted to remove the cover. Hence we did. But she got the effect of plastic bags on plants growth.

This is a simple experiment taught her a great lesson!

  1. very much educative to the kids. Definitely we all should explain to our little ones the effect of plastic. I am also going to do it. Thank you Dhiyana for this simple yet informative experiment.

  2. I think adults could learn a lot from this experiment too! Maybe make us think twice before letting that plastic bag just blow away or tossing it in the trash. Your daughter sounds like she has a good heart – it’s so sweet that she didn’t want the plant to die. 🙂
