When we were playing stacking blocks with my toddler, she showed her interest towards color sorting by stacking the same colored blocks together.
I looked around the house for color sorting object. The first thing that caught my eye was pom poms.
I introduced her Pom Poms and asked to drop them on the matching blocks. We started slowly with one Pom pom in each color and moved towards 4 in each color.
When she was comfortable with the color sorting, I introduced her to color discrimination. If I keep the blue bowl, she has to pick only blue color and drop them in the jar. I usually keep a different colored jar on the next day.
Then I pasted some stickers on the cards and asked her to place the Pom poms on the matching colored stickers. It requires more hand eye coordination.
Now she is very comfortable with colour sorting. It is time to introduce her to various sorting like shapes, sizes etc. and matching too.
How did you introduce your child to sorting techniques?
