My seven year old recently learnt her multiplication tables and needed a lot of practice. She loves to play games. I usually use that opportunity to teach her facts through math games. She learnt addition, subtraction facts from games itself. This time we concentrated on all three facts – addition, subtraction and multiplication.

Material needed :
1. A card with 16 numbers. This can be made by having a 4×4 square in a paper.
2. 2 Dices
3. Counters
We used bingo card which came with a math bingo game we got from Target dollar section. But it is very easy to create one by writing 16 nos in a piece of paper.
The dices are part of Polyhedral dice set. We used ten faced dice with numbers from 0 to 9 and twelve faced dice with numbers from 1 to 12. If the number rolled is above 10, we made it as 10. You could use the regular dices available in home.
How to play the game:
1. Take turns to roll the dices and find the product of the numbers rolled. For example, if you rolled 3 and 6, then the product is 3*6=18.
2. Now the goal is to make 18 using the available numbers from the card even if the number 18 is already in the card. Lets say the card has the numbers 16 and 2, then cover those numbers (16+2=18). You can also use subtraction facts or the combination of both to arrive at 18.
3. Once a number is used, cover them with counters so that they can’t be reused any more.
4. The first one who covers all the numbers on the card wins the game.
5. Since the goal is to cover the numbers faster,I encouraged my daughter to use more than 2 numbers at a time. For example, if your child has 20,5 and 3 in the board, then they can be used to arrive at 18 (20-5+3)
My daughter was able to find out the product easily. But I had to help her to identify the numbers to cover by giving her clue whether such numbers are available or not. If numbers are available, then she would find out the numbers and its operations. After few attempts, she was comfortable to find out 3 numbers and combination of operations.
When both of us had only number left out in the card, it was time consuming as we were waiting for the exact 2 numbers to be rolled. To finish the game, we removed all the counters and reused all the numbers.
This is a simple game. My daughter enjoyed this math game very much. We repeated the game few times.
