When my daughter was showing interest to learn hand sewing, this was the first activity we did. This simple activity taught her making stitches and knots.
Materials needed :
1. Hair rubber band
2. Felt
3. Needle
4. Thread
5. Button
6. Scissors
7. Copier paper
Method :
Step 1 : My daughter drew a five petal flower and a leaf on a sheet of paper and cut it out to make flower & leaf templates.
Step 2: She traced the flower template on two shades of blue felt and leaf template on green felt.
Step 3: She cut out the pieces. Cutting felt was very difficult for her.
Step 4: She hand sewed the flowers together and later sewed the leaves.
Step 5: She sewed the entire flower to the rubber band.
Step 6: She stitched a button at the center of the flower to hide her beginner stitches.
Flower hair rubber band is done! I encourage her to do simple DIY projects to practice her skill. She becomes happy and confident when she creates something.

It’s always good to learn how to sew on a button. And, the hair band turned out so cute!
