It is always to fun to introduce science to kids through simple household things. My daughters and I enjoyed performing the science experiment about light and color. We learnt that light would pass through white and not through black.
Materials needed (Affiliation links used)
1. Milk or Juice Carton
2. White printer paper
3. Crayola Construction Paper – We used black color
5. Knife
Method
1. Clean and dry the milk or juice carton. We used milk carton.
2. Cut out the top portion. Draw pictures on the all the sides of the carton. As Christmas is approaching, to be little more festive, I drew Christmas trees on all the sides. Cut out the pictures using the knife. To be more clear, only the inside portion of the pictures should be cut out.
3. Wrap two adjacent sides of the carton with white printer paper and the other two sides with black construction paper.
4. Keep the tea light inside the carton. Light will pass the white paper but not through the black paper. We talked about the reason behind. Black objects absorb most light and White objects absorb less light.
5. We continued our experiment inside a dark room which was the most fun part for my kids.
It is a very simple experiment to teach about basics of light. It is very easy to set up and kids will have fun playing with it.
Variations
- Cover each sides with different color paper to find out which color will absorb less light.
