Today’s post is about a simple booklet I have created to teach my preschooler to blend CVC words. I made a very similar one for my elder daughter when she was showing interest to read. Because everything is festive at this time of the year, I made the booklet in the Christmas light shape and made it a Christmas literacy activity.

Materials needed to make this Christmas literacy activity :
1. Printer paper
2. Permanent markers
3. A card board. I used a pasta box.
4. Staples
5. Glue
6. Aluminium foil (Optional)
7. Christmas light template (Optional)
Preparation:
- Fold printer paper in half and then in half. Draw the light in the front page. I drew the light free hand. Christmas light templates are available in the internet. They can be used too.
- Cut out the lights. Each sheet gave me 4 lights. I used 4 sheets of paper to create 16 lights. Repeat step 1 for all 4 sheets.
- Color 3 lights with the permanent markers. These lights make the front cover of the booklet.
- Write the vowels in 5 lights. That left me with 8 lights which I made into 2 groups for consonants. Hope my math is correct 🙂
- Write the consonants. I choose B,R,S and L for the consonants before the vowels and D,M,N and T for consonants after the vowel.
- Staples the 3 groups separately.
- Cut out a rectangle from the card board which is slightly bigger than the size of the three lights.
- Cover the card board rectangle with Aluminium foil. This step is optional if the blank card board does not bother you.
- Glue the stapled lights to the card board in the order of Consonants, Vowels and Consonants.
Method to use:
The child has to blend the CVC letters to create the word. The first word for us is B A D. My daughter lifted the next paper in the vowel to make B E D and then B I D. If she has lifted the first consonants paper, she might have got R A D. Obviously there will be some words which are not real but this booklet gives practice to blend the words.
