Paper weaving is one of the favorite activities in our house. Paper weaving introduces kids to the basic concept of weaving. We have already created a basket with cereal box and done needle weaving. Now, we made a heart using our snow painted watercolor paper.
Paper weaving
Materials needed to do paper weaving:
- Color papers in contracting colors
- White printer paper
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
- School glue
Method:
- We used the snow painted watercolor papers for our weaving. But any color papers can be used.
- Fold a paper in half horizontally. Draw a line an inch below the open side of the fold. This marks the boundary for cutting the paper.
- Draw lines perpendicular to the first line. Our perpendicular lines are 1 inch apart.
- Cut on the perpendicular lines up to the the parallel line.
- Unfold the paper and lay it flat.
- Cut another paper into 1 inch strips.
- Begin weaving by inserting the 1 inch strip above and below through the cuts in the paper. This is the basic step of weaving.
- Continue weaving the entire paper.
- Trim the strips. Paste them to the paper with school glue
- Draw a heart shape in the white printer paper. Remove the heart shape. We need the white paper after removing the heart shape.
- Place the white paper with the heart shape removed on top of the woven sheet and paste it with school glue.
The beautiful woven paper heart is done! My preschooler needed a lot of help with weaving. I believe I should wait a few more months before I try weaving with her. The kids should be at least in 1st grade to weave independently. But it was a good intro to weaving.
