We made a pretty heart garland as part of our Valentine crafts. I made it a literacy valentine craft for my preschooler by making it an alphabet heart garland. This activity is good for letter recognition and fine motor skill. It is easy to set up. I have used for letter recognition, however can be used to learn sight words or practice math problems. The possibilities are endless.
Materials to make this Valentine craft
- Color paper or construction paper
- Yarn
- Tape
- Scissors
- Pencil
- Marker
Method
- Cut out heart shapes from the color or construction paper. I made a heart template from the printer paper and used it to cut other hearts.
- Write the alphabets in the hearts with marker.
- Gather the required materials for this one of the simplest Valentine crafts – yarn, scissors, tape and the alphabet hearts.
- Invite the child to make the garland.
- The heart alphabets were not in the order. So my preschooler and I kept the heart alphabets in the order.
- Leave around an inch of yarn at the end. Starting with “A”, ask the child to keep the heart alphabet below the yarn, paste it to the yarn with a piece of tape. My preschooler was able to handle this step. It involves identifying the alphabets, keeping it below the yarn, cutting and pasting the tape.
- Once “Z” is reached, cut the yarn from the bundle.
The alphabet heart garland is ready to decorate your home! I wrote my alphabets in the alternate colors to make the garland look a little more interesting.
