We reused the ice cubes used in our ice color sorting activity, to do a color mixing activity. Color mixing activities teach kids about making new colors from basic colors. Ice adds an additional interest making this activity a hit with preschoolers and toddlers.
Color mixing activities!
Materials needed for this color mixing activity:
- Ice cube trays
- Food colors
- Bowls
- Paper
- Marker
Preparation:
This was an unplanned activity. My planned activity was ice color sorting. I came up with this idea when my daughter was sorting the ice. I cut a piece of printer paper into 4 and wrote the “color making recipe”. Recipe tells the color of ice in specific quality that need to be mixed with another color. Nothing fancy.
Colored ice was made by freezing the food color added water.
Play:
I had made six recipe sheets. My daughter followed the recipe and spooned the corresponding ice cubes to the bowls. We kept each bowl on its recipe sheet and waited for the ice to melt.
My preschooler went to check on the ice every two minutes. After the ice had melted, new colors had been created. Simple! What a fun way to learn about color mixing? What do you think?
