Materials needed to create these Valentines days watercolor cards:
Please do not let the supplies list scare you. We have tried multiple watercolor techniques. You can try many of them without the complete supplies list.
- Watercolor paper
- Washable liquid watercolor set
- Heart dollies
- Spray bottles
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Paint dotters
- Masking tape
- Acrylic paint
- Card stock
Preparation:
I drew heart shapes in the watercolor paper with the hot glue gun and glue sticks and let them dry overnight. I separated watercolor paper into 4 rectangles using a masking tape. Those were the only preparations I had to do for this activity.
Watercolor techniques used to create these cards and bookmarks:
My preschooler was excited to use the spray bottles for the first time. Out of the 6 bottles, 2 bottles were with short straws. We found it very difficult to use them. All other four bottles were perfectly fine.
My preschooler sprayed the liquid watercolor over the glue heart. It was fun to watch the color mixing with each other. We loved the washable liquid watercolor paint. The colors were bright and beautiful. It stained our fingers but got washed off when we cleaned our hands.
My ten year old sprayed the colors on the paper. She waited for few minutes for the paint to dry. Then she used the heart dollies as stamps. She dabbed the acrylic paint using the paint dotters on the heart dollies.
Also, she created few bookmarks. She tried gradient technique in one of the bookmarks and sprinkled salt over the wet paint in another bookmark like we did in our watercolor tulip painting.
The paint dried very fast. We sprayed clean water over the dried paint to create unique designs.
We painted for more than 2 hours. At the end we had painted quite a lot of papers. Each one of them was unique.
When the paintings were completely dry, I removed the masking tape. Cut out the painting and pasted them on to the colored card stock to create the Valentines day cards.
We had made cards, gift tags and book marks. My kids thoroughly enjoyed exploring liquid watercolor with spray bottles.
My preschooler used the paint liberally and layered again and again. The watercolor paper was able to hold the paint well.
