My preschooler needs a lot of activities to develop her fine motor skills. I believe Valentines day is not just about sharing gifts and cards. We can create so many fun developmental activities around it. I created a heart Geoboard for my preschooler. This Valentines day fine motor activity is easy to create and provides hours of play!

Valentines day fine motor activity!

Materials needed to make heart geoboard

1. Cardboard box
2. Rubber bands
3. Paper fastener
4. Pencil
5. Acrylic paint (Optional)
6. Paint brushes (Opti0nal)

Preparation – Creating the heart geoboard

1. I used the empty cereal box for my geoboard. It was not strong. Next time I will use thick cardboard boxes like the ones in which fruits are sold.
2. I drew a heart shape with pencil.
3. Painted inside and outside of the heart with acrylic paint .  This step is optional.
4. Punched holes on the outline of the heart. The holes were around an inch apart. I poked with knife to make a small hole. Then used a dowel with sharp end to make a medium sized holes.
5. Pushed paper fastener into each hole. I did not completely tightened the paper fastener as the rubber band had to have  space to “sit” in between the cardboard and paper fastener.

How to play with the geoboard

The child has to connect the paper fasteners with rubber bands.  There are no rules where to connect. It is up to the child to explore. My daughter had a nice time playing with it.

A word of caution : My daughter does not put any thing other than food in her mouth. Even then I was cautious when she was using the rubber bands. Please supervise.

Is it simple to make this Valentines day fine motor activity ? It is fun to play too.
