Pi Day is celebrated annually on March 14 as 3, 1, 4 are the first three digits of Pi. We made a simple Pi Day activity. It gave an introduction to my kids about the most important math constant Pi. Paint made the math activity an art project too.

Pi Day activity!

Materials needed to make this activity:

1. Printer paper
2. Paint
3. Q-tip
4. Ruler
5. Pencil
6. Scissors

Purpose of the activity:

The purpose of the activity is to find out which number appears first, the tenth time in Pi. As Pi keeps on going, all the numbers will repeat multiple times. The idea is to find out which number comes first the tenth time and to make a graph to visualize it.

Method:

1. Draw a Pi in the printer paper and cut it out. I drew free hand. You can easily make it out from the picture below 🙂
2. Draw 10*10 rectangles in the legs of Pi (is leg the correct word?). I split the rectangles across both the legs.
3. Write 0 to 5 in the left leg and 6 to 9 in the right leg.
4. Print the first 100 digits of Pi from math.com
5. Using Q-tip and paint, start graphing the number in the Pi graph in the order it appeared in Pi.
6. Three and nine were always competing with one another.

Do you know which number appears comes first the tenth time in Pi? It is number 9. Three was pretty much close to it.

It was fascinating to talk about infinite numbers. They were surprised to know that the digits go on for ever.
